What Is Ride With Me?

"Our Job is to combat highway tedium, not cause it."

Bob Magee
Founder Ride With Me Audio

William Least Heat Moon, author of best-selling Blue Highways, once wrote, "No area is boring of itself. Boredom represents our lack of understanding of what’s around us." He got it right. When you learn the stories from beyond the tree line, Interstate monotony vanishes. Periods of boredom become intervals of enrichment.

Because busy people don’t have time to do a lot of research, RIDE WITH ME Audio was created to do the work for them. Now, you can just sit back and enjoy the ride as we tell the nation’s stories and the miles fly by. We’ll also alert you to interesting side trips available along your route of travel.

In a system unique to RIDE WITH ME, the highway audio programs remain synchronized to milepost markers regardless of speed traveled. As you hear the stories, you’ll be driving through the locality being described. Drive any speed you want. We’ll be right there with you.

To avoid information overload, the narrators periodically tell you to turn off the tape and then to turn it back on again when you reach a certain milepost, exit or landmark. This provides listeners plenty of time to converse, listen to the radio or just think about what they’ve been learning. Spot-the-milepost becomes a popular diversion for otherwise restless children.

In-depth research, crisp writing and professional narrations are hallmarks of RIDE WITH ME ‘s. Our original scripts are the results of months of detailed research, on-site visits, careful drafting and meticulous editing. Our programs are performed by such well known artists as Grover Gardner, Flo Gibson, Kimberly Schraf, John MacDonald and Michael Russotto.

Careful preparation paid off. In awarding RIDE WITH ME the "Most Innovative Audio Idea Award," The Washington Post wrote: "The material – an original witty mix of history, commerce, geology and geography – succeeds in transforming a long dull road into an interesting drive." The Philadelphia Inquirer noted "You don’t even have to be going anywhere. Armchair travelers will enjoy these tapes too."

As the business grew, we started a new line, "America's Favorite Places," focused on major U.S. tourist attractions. Soon programs such as "The Williamsburg Story" "The Mount Vernon Story," "The Atlanta Story," and "Tropical South Texas" were receiving reviews as favorable as those for the highway programs. To service customers with specific tapes requests, we established a new group, Heritage Audio.

In order to provide our customers as wide a choice as possible, we partner with other firms whose original audio works we like. Throughout our catalog, programs prepared by companies other than RIDE WITH ME are marked with an asterisk. Try their works. You’ll like them too.
